First, what is FADA?

FADA stands for the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations. A dealer is the showroom where you actually buy your scooter or car. A federation is a group of groups. So FADA is the national body of the people who run vehicle showrooms.

Every month, FADA publishes Retail sales: sales to the final buyer, like a family taking home a new bike, a shopkeeper buying a goods truck, or a farmer buying a tractor. This is different from what companies send to dealers. Retail sales tell you what real customers bought.

What happened?

How the news came out
  1. Sept 2025Sales are weak. Many buyers wait because a GST cut is coming.12
  2. Sept 2026India sells 25,36,920 vehicles, up 31.82% on a year ago and 4.69% on August.1
  3. 6 Oct 2026FADA releases the numbers and calls it the best-ever September for Indian auto retail.1
  4. NowNavratri and Dussehra deliveries begin. Most dealers expect October to grow.1

Seven out of ten were two-wheelers

17,90,188 of the 25,36,920 vehicles were scooters and bikes.12 That is about 59,673 two-wheelers a day. Parked in one line, at about 2 metres per bike, one day's sales would stretch nearly 120 km.

About 4.27 lakh cars

4,27,213 passenger vehicles were sold.12 That is about 1 in every 6 vehicles. For every car, India bought about four two-wheelers.

The surprise: about 3.34 lakh were electric

Electric vehicle (EV) sales hit an all-time monthly high of about 3.34 lakh.1 Among cars only, the EV share was smaller, 8.45%.1 So EVs are spreading faster among other kinds of vehicles than among cars.

One more surprising line: in passenger vehicles, alternative fuel vehicles made up 41% of sales, almost level with petrol at 41.27%.1 Alternative fuel means anything that is not plain petrol or diesel, such as electric, CNG or hybrid.

Trucks, buses and goods carriers sold 1,03,557 units. FADA says this is the first time the segment crossed one lakh in a September.1

The 32% puzzle

Sales were 31.82% higher than September 2025.1 That sounds huge. But FADA itself warns the number is inflated, because of the Base effect.

In September 2025, many buyers waited. A cut in GST (the tax added to what you buy) was coming, so people delayed their purchase.12 Sales that month were low, so this year looks extra strong next to it.

Why does this matter?

  • For families: vehicle sales show how confident people feel about big purchases.
  • For jobs: every vehicle sold supports work at showrooms, service centres, parts makers and lenders.
  • For the air: 13 in every 100 new vehicles going electric means fewer tailpipes. Still small, but a record.
  • For the festive season: demand that waited through Pitru Paksha is expected to become Navratri and Dussehra deliveries.1

Quick check

Sales grew 31.82% this September. Why does FADA say that figure is “base-distorted”?

Right! Not quite. A weak month last year makes this year's growth look bigger. Over April–August, growth was about 17%.1

What we don't know yet

Quick glossary

GST

Base effect
When growth looks big (or small) because last year's number was unusually low (or high).
alternative fuel
Anything that isn't plain petrol or diesel: electric, CNG, hybrid.

Three questions people ask

Was September 2026 really a record?

Yes. 25,36,920 vehicles is the most sold in any month, and FADA called it the best-ever September.12

Is the market really growing 32%?

Not quite. The 32% is inflated because sales were weak in September 2025, when buyers waited for a GST cut. Growth over April to August 2026 was about 17%.1

How many of the vehicles were electric?

About 3.34 lakh, roughly 13 in every 100 vehicles sold. That is an all-time monthly high.1
