First, what is the price of gold?
In India, gold is usually priced for 10 grams. Ten grams is about the weight of two small coins. On 13 October 2026, 10 grams of 24-carat gold cost ₹1,49,670 in Mumbai and ₹1,49,810 in Delhi [1]. That is almost ₹15,000 for a single gram (our maths).
Different websites show slightly different prices. One tracker showed about ₹1,50,514 on 12 October [4]. The price changes with the city, the time of day and the website. So in the video we say about ₹1.5 lakh, and we don't claim one exact figure.
24-carat means almost pure gold. Most jewellery is 22-carat or lower, which mixes gold with other metals to make it stronger.
What happened?
- Jan 2026Gold hits its 2026 high. In India, 10 grams crossed ₹1.7 lakh [4][5].
- Apr–Jun 2026The average price is ₹1,50,744 for 10 grams. A year earlier it was ₹94,875 [2].
- Jul 2026The World Gold Council reports India's April–June demand: less gold, more money [2][3].
- 13 Oct 202610 grams of 24-carat gold costs about ₹1.5 lakh [1].
- 6 Nov 2026Dhanteras, the day many families buy gold [6][7].
The numbers, explained simply
The World Gold Council collects data on how much gold people buy. Here is what it found for India in April to June 2026, compared with the same months of 2025 [2][3].
| Type | Change |
|---|---|
| Jewellery (75.1 tonnes) | −15% |
| Coins & bars (50.3 tonnes) | +9% |
| All gold (131.4 tonnes) | −6% |
So people did not stop buying. They changed what they bought. Jewellery fell, but coins and bars went up. Coins and bars are gold kept as savings, not worn [3].
Buyers also picked lighter jewellery and lower-carat pieces. Some swapped old jewellery for new instead of paying fully in cash [3]. This is how families keep buying when the price is high.
The twist: high, but not at the top
Here is the surprise. ₹1.5 lakh feels like a record, but it is not. In January 2026, 10 grams of gold crossed ₹1.7 lakh in India [4][5]. Today's price is high, but lower than January's peak.
Trackers don't agree on the exact January peak. One says ₹1,80,986 [4], and another says just above ₹1.7 lakh [5]. So we only use the safe figure: above ₹1.7 lakh.
Why does this matter?
- Gold is family savings. Many Indian homes keep gold for weddings and hard times. A higher price means each gram of savings costs more.
- Jewellers feel it first. Jewellery fell 15% by weight [3], so shops sell fewer grams.
- Habits are changing. More coins and bars [3] means more people see gold as an investment, not just as something to wear.
- Dhanteras is close. It falls on 6 November 2026 [6][7]. It's the day many families buy gold, so it will test whether the price holds buyers back.

Three questions people ask
Is gold at its highest price ever right now?
No. In January 2026, 10 grams crossed ₹1.7 lakh in India [4][5]. Today's price is about ₹1.5 lakh [1].
Why do different websites show different gold prices?
Prices change through the day and from city to city. Some sites add taxes or use a different time. That's why we use a rounded figure.
