The ticket: 12 shares, not one
In an IPO (initial public offering), a company sells shares to the public for the first time. You can't ask for a single share. You bid in lots, and for Jio one lot is 12 shares 1. At the top of the price band, ₹1,119, one lot costs 12 × ₹1,119 = ₹13,428 2.

The twist: the big money came first
By the close of day one the issue was bid 3.04 times over 1. But the demand was not spread evenly. QIBs (qualified institutional buyers, such as mutual funds and insurers) had bid more than nine times their share. Small investors had not yet filled theirs.

Small investors often bid late, on the last day. So day one is only an early signal. An early-morning count by Groww showed retail at 0.14 times, which shows how fast these numbers move 2.
Why it matters
- For families thinking of applying: the deadline is 23 October, the smallest bid is about ₹13,428.
- For Reliance shareholders: check whether you held shares on the filing date. You may be able to bid in your own quota as well.
- For everyone: an IPO being bid many times over does not tell you what the share will do after listing. Read the offer document.
Send them this: 12 shares, about ₹13,428, closes 23 October. And read the offer document first.
