Jio lists today. How much tax if you sell your shares?

Jio Platforms' shares list on BSE and NSE on 28 October 2026. Sell them within a year and the profit is a short-term gain, taxed at 20% plus a 4% cess: about ₹624 on one lot if the share lists ₹250 higher.

Numbers That Surprised Me · 28 Oct 2026 · 4 min read
₹624
Tax on one lot of 12 Jio shares sold on listing day, if each share lists ₹250 above the ₹1,119 issue price. The ₹250 is only an example, not a forecast.
Our maths using the 20% rate + 4% cess 5,6
In 30 seconds
  • Jio Platforms lists on BSE and NSE today, 28 October 2026, at an issue price of ₹1,119 a share 1,2.
  • One lot is 12 shares, so ₹13,428 3.
  • Sell within 12 months of allotment and the profit is a short-term gain, taxed at 20% plus 4% cess 5,6.
  • Example: a ₹250 rise per share means ₹3,000 profit and ₹624 in tax (our maths).
  • Hold more than 12 months and the rate is 12.5%, with the first ₹1.25 lakh of long-term gains each year tax-free 6.

Why ₹250 as the example?

Nobody knows the listing price until trading opens. Before listing, the unofficial grey market premium for Jio was quoted at about ₹245 to ₹257 a share 4. We picked a round ₹250 to show the maths. It is not a forecast: the share can list higher, lower, or below the issue price.

Do the mathsDo the maths: one lot, sold on listing dayExample price only

On ₹3,000 of profit, ₹624 goes to tax. Brokerage, other trading charges and any surcharge are not counted here.

The twist: wait a year

The 12 months are counted from the allotment date, 26 October 2026 1,6. Sell after that and the profit becomes a long-term gain. Long-term gains on listed shares are taxed at 12.5%, but only on the part above ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year 6. So if your long-term gains for the year stay under ₹1.25 lakh, the tax is zero.

What the numbers tell us

  1. Scale
About a fifth of the profit

With cess, the short-term rate works out to 20.8%. Whatever the listing price, roughly ₹21 of every ₹100 of profit goes to tax (our maths).

  2. What drives it
    The clock starts at allotment

The 12 months run from 26 October 2026, the allotment date, not from the listing day 6.

  3. Trend
    A loss is not wasted

If the share lists below ₹1,119 and you sell, the short-term loss can reduce tax on other capital gains 6.

  4. What to watch
It goes in your tax return

Even a small listing-day profit is taxable, and you report it as a short-term capital gain in your income tax return 5.

Why it matters

  • For people who got a lot: if you sell today, keep about a fifth of the profit aside for tax. Report it in your income tax return.
  • For people planning to hold: note 26 October 2027 in your calendar; selling after that date changes the rate.
  • For everyone: the tax is on the profit, never on the full ₹13,428.

Learn something: short-term capital gain

short-term capital gain

Profit from selling listed shares within 12 months of getting them. It is taxed at a flat rate, not your income slab.

In this story

Since 23 July 2024 the rate is 20% (it was 15% before) 5,6, and Budget 2026-27 kept it 7. On a ₹3,000 listing-day profit, that is ₹600 before cess.

Try it: You sell one lot at ₹1,219 a share. How much tax, with cess?

Profit = ₹100 × 12 = ₹1,200. Tax = 20% = ₹240, cess = ₹9.60, total ₹249.60.

Send them this: sell within a year and 20% + 4% cess goes to tax. On a ₹3,000 profit, that's ₹624.

An extra charge on the tax of people with very high incomes.
