Royal Enfield just had its best month ever. It still lost ground
A record 1,33,958 motorcycles in September, but India's two-wheeler market grew twice as fast. The company's real strength is somewhere else.
Royal Enfield sold 1,33,958 motorcycles in September 2026, the most it has ever sold in a single month. That is up 8% from a year earlier and works out to about 4,465 bikes a day, or one every 19 seconds.
The headline is real. But set against the rest of India's two-wheeler market, the picture is more mixed, and more interesting. Three things stand out.
The short version
- In India, Royal Enfield grew 6.8% while the two-wheeler market grew 13.5%. Its share slipped to 4.93%.
- Its growth is slowing: +23% last financial year, +20% from April to September, +8% in September.
- Its stronghold is not big bikes. Nearly 9 in 10 of its bikes are 350cc or smaller, a segment where it holds a reported 93% share.
1A record month in a market that grew faster
September was a big month for everyone selling two-wheelers. Companies dispatched 24,63,103 two-wheelers to dealers in India, up 13.5% from a year earlier, according to industry data compiled by AutoPunditz.
Royal Enfield's India number was 1,21,326, up 6.8%. That is about half the market's pace. Honda grew 25.9%, TVS 16.6% and Hero 14.2%. Only Bajaj, among the big makers, did worse, with sales down 12.2%.
| Maker | Sep 2026 units | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Honda | 6,36,768 | +25.9% |
| TVS | 4,82,073 | +16.6% |
| Hero MotoCorp | 7,39,432 | +14.2% |
| All two-wheelers | 24,63,103 | +13.5% |
| Royal Enfield | 1,21,326 | +6.8% |
| Bajaj Auto | 2,39,771 | −12.2% |
So the record and the slipping share are both true. Royal Enfield's share of India's two-wheeler dispatches fell by 0.31 percentage points, to 4.93%. A rising market lifted it to a record, but it rose less than the market did.
2The growth is slowing, and exports are picking up the slack
Over a longer stretch, Royal Enfield is still growing fast. In the financial year to March 2026 it sold 12,38,659 motorcycles, up 23%, and for the first time sold more than 10 lakh bikes in India in a single year. From April to September 2026 it sold 7,09,096, up another 20%.
| Period | Bikes | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Apr 2025 – Mar 2026 (FY26) | 12,38,659 | +23% |
| Apr – Sep 2026 | 7,09,096 | +20% |
| Sep 2026 | 1,33,958 | +8% |
Part of September's growth came from abroad. Of the 1,33,958 bikes, 1,21,326 stayed in India and 12,632 went overseas. Exports grew 17%, more than twice as fast as sales at home.
| Market | Bikes | Change |
|---|---|---|
| India | 1,21,326 | +7% |
| Exports | 12,632 | +17% |
The company is pushing overseas, with new launches in South-East Asia and its first electric motorcycle, the Flying Flea C6, in parts of Europe and the UK. Exports are still less than one bike in ten, though. The Indian market decides how the year goes.
3Its stronghold is the 350cc bike, not the big one
Royal Enfield's image is built on big, heavy motorcycles. Its sales are not. In the year to March 2026, 10,87,051 of its 12,38,659 bikes had engines of 350cc or smaller. That is about 88%.
| Engine size | Bikes, FY26 |
|---|---|
| 350cc or smaller | 10,87,051 |
| Above 350cc | 1,51,608 |
| Total | 12,38,659 |
In that 250–350cc class, Royal Enfield has almost no rival. A Whalesbook analysis puts its share of the segment at about 93% in FY26. The segment grew 26% to about 11 lakh bikes. Honda, the nearest challenger, sold 56,713.
| Maker | FY26 bikes |
|---|---|
| Royal Enfield | ≈10.2 lakh |
| Honda | 56,713 |
| TVS | 9,718 |
| Bajaj Auto | 3,512 |
| Kawasaki | 1,474 |
| Yamaha | 165 |
The segment's star is the Classic 350. In September it sold 47,286 units, up 16.9%, and was the only 350cc bike in India's top ten two-wheelers. It was still far behind the leader: Hero's Splendor sold 4,31,279, about nine times as many.
| Model | Units | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Splendor | 4,31,279 | +12.5% |
| Activa | 3,52,271 | +48.2% |
| Shine | 1,89,941 | +2.6% |
| Jupiter | 1,54,725 | +8.9% |
| Pulsar | 1,36,313 | −12.5% |
| HF Deluxe | 1,14,064 | −3.4% |
| Access | 71,928 | −0.4% |
| Apache | 61,148 | +14.7% |
| TVS XL | 55,517 | +3.3% |
| Classic 350 | 47,286 | +16.9% |
That is the real business. Royal Enfield doesn't need to beat commuter bikes on volume. It owns the step up from them: the 350cc bike that many buyers move to after a commuter bike.
What to watch
Dhanteras and Diwali, the year's biggest buying days, fall in early November this year. The company has said it is raising production and stock for the festive season. Its October update, usually out on the first of the month, will show how much of that pre-festive build-up reached dealers, and whether the record holds.
The harder question is share. Honda grew almost four times as fast in September, and has been chipping at the 250–350cc class. A 93% share has nowhere to go but down. The test is whether Royal Enfield can keep growing while its share shrinks.
